January 24th, 2008J.B. and Daisy Lewis Honored at Christmas Dinner
December 21st, 2007 Because of the difference that J.B. and Daisy Lewis have made in the lives of dozens of young people in Pender County over several decades, the Burgaw Rotary Club honored them at their annual holiday dinner held at the Castle Bay Country Club in Hampstead on December 18th.
According to club president Chuck Wilson, ”Many years ago J.B. made a generous contribution for the purpose of establishing a Burgaw Rotary scholarship fund for seniors graduating from Pender and Trask High Schools. Because of the generous initial contribution and the subsequent growth of the fund, each year the interest from the endowment goes to provide several scholarships to outstanding graduating seniors who are college bound.”
“Virtually dozens of county students have been the beneficiary of scholarship awards from the Lewis gift, but because of the then anonymity of the donor they did not know the source of the funding at the time” said Jim Fouche, chairman of the club’s Scholarship Committee. While club members also raise funds for scholarships, the majority of the funding for scholarships is the result of the Lewis gift.
The crystal award given to the couple recognizes J.B. and Daisy Lewis for their “Outstanding Community Service.” “It is a proper tribute to a generous couple who have made our county a better place to live,” said Wilson. Both J.B. and Daisy have been active community supporters. J.B. served as President of the Burgaw Rotary Club in 1975 and has also served as chairman of the Pender Memorial Hospital Board, president of the N.C. Meat Packers Association, and for three-terms as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Burgaw Baptist Church. He is also a 32nd degree Mason and a past president of King Solomon’s Lodge.
According to Jim Fouche, “we are pleased to be able to finally recognize this wonderful couple. The gift has remained anonymous for too long and we wanted to share with the community the source of this generosity.”

December 6th, 2007The ABC’s of Rotary
November 8th, 2007These short articles about Rotary were first published in the weekly bulletin of the Rotary Club of North Stockton, California, U.S.A. That was well before their author, Cliff Dochterman, became president of Rotary International for the year 1992-93. Originally called “Did Ya Know?” the pieces were prepared to share interesting facts about Rotary International with members of the North Stockton club. Later, in response to requests from other Rotary clubs, the articles were reprinted in collected form. Now, President Cliff has brought the collection up to date in keeping with one of the emphases of his year in office as R.l. president–to help Rotarians learn more about the colorful history of their organization, its customs and traditions, and the current status of its global programs. The articles may be reprinted in Rotary club bulletins or presented as Rotary information at weekly club meetings.
